SupaWood Raw 16mm Profile
SupaWood Raw is PG Bison’s premium, un-laminated MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard). Unlike the Melamine-faced boards we’ve discussed, “Raw” means it has no decorative paper on the surface. It is the ultimate “blank canvas” for high-end joinery and custom furniture.
At 16mm, it is the industry’s most utilized thickness for cabinetry doors, drawer fronts, and internal shelving.
Key Characteristics
-
Ultra-Smooth Surface: The surface is exceptionally fine and sanded to a smooth finish at the factory. This makes it the ideal substrate for high-gloss painting, spray-painting, or hand-painting, as there is no wood grain to “telegraph” through the finish.
-
Homogeneous Core: Because it is made of fine wood fibers compressed at high density, the core is consistent throughout. This allows for intricate machining and routing. You can carve designs into the face or create beveled edges that remain crisp and solid.
-
No Splintering: Unlike plywood or chipboard, SupaWood Raw cuts cleanly without “chipping” on the edges, making it a favorite for complex CNC-routed patterns.
Primary Applications
-
Spray-Painted Cabinetry: If you want a kitchen in a custom color (like a specific Farrow & Ball or Plascon shade), 16mm Raw SupaWood is the board used. It is sealed and then spray-painted for a seamless, “liquid” look.
-
Wrapped Doors: Used as the base for PVC foil vacuum-pressed doors (thermo-wrapping). The edges are routed to a profile, and the foil is sucked over the 16mm board.
-
Furniture Components: Ideal for bed frames, coffee tables, and floating shelves that will be painted or veneered.
-
Wall Decorative Panels: Often used for 3D wall features or “slat” walls where the raw board is cut into strips and painted.
Working with 16mm Raw SupaWood
-
Sealing is Key: Because the edges are more porous than the face, they must be properly “sealed” with a primer or wood filler before painting to prevent the paint from soaking in unevenly.
-
Screw Holding: It has excellent screw-holding strength on the face, but when screwing into the 16mm edge, it is vital to pre-drill to avoid splitting the fibers.
-
Moisture Sensitivity: Standard Raw SupaWood is not waterproof. If it gets wet, it will swell like a sponge. For bathrooms or high-moisture areas, you should look for the Green Core (Moisture Resistant) version.
