Kalapana Profile

Kalapana is the deepest solid black in the PG Bison collection. Named after the volcanic black sand beaches of Hawaii, it is designed for high-impact, sophisticated interiors that require a true, saturated black rather than a dark grey.

Aesthetic and Texture

Kalapana serves as a primary “anchor” color for modern design. Its appearance is defined by the premium finishes in which it is most commonly featured:

• SupaMatt Finish: This is the flagship finish for Kalapana. It provides a soft-touch, velvety surface that absorbs light to create a “void-like” black effect. Importantly, it features anti-fingerprint technology, which is critical for maintaining a clean look on such a dark surface.

• SupaGloss Finish: A high-gloss, reflective surface that creates a mirror-like finish. This version is often used in luxury kitchens to add depth and a sense of “liquid” black.

• Peen Finish: A standard stippled texture that is highly durable and scratch-resistant. While less “glamorous” than the premium finishes, it is frequently used for internal carcasses when the exterior of the cupboard is black.

Design Applications

Kalapana is typically used to create contrast or a moody, high-end atmosphere:

• Feature Islands: A black kitchen island paired with lighter perimeter cabinets is a classic contemporary look.

• Integrated Appliances: It is often used for cabinetry surrounding black ovens and hobs to create a seamless, integrated appearance.

• Industrial Accents: Used for floating shelves, open carcasses, or “shadow line” details between drawers.

• Retail Displays: Because black makes other colors stand out, it is a favorite for high-end boutique shelving and backdrops.

Recommended Pairings

Kalapana acts as a “frame” for other textures in the PG Bison range:

• With Heavy Woodgrains: It pairs perfectly with rustic woodgrains like Brookhill or Kirkwall, as the black highlights the darker “knots” and grain lines in the timber.

• With Stone Textures: Combine it with Luca Polenta or Napoca for a raw, industrial-chic aesthetic.

• With Warm Metals: It is the ideal partner for brushed gold, brass, or copper hardware, which provides a striking visual “pop” against the dark background.

• Core: Usually bonded to SupaWood (MDF) for SupaMatt and SupaGloss applications to ensure a perfectly smooth, ripple-free surface.

• Standard Size: 2750mm x 1830mm.

• Standard Thickness: 16mm.

• Hygienic Surface: Like all MelaWood products, it includes an anti-bacterial additive that inhibits bacterial growth on the surface.
